Note: Major Michael LaChance died on Saturday Oct 4th 2015. He wrote the following epitaph which was read at his life celebration.
"War is stupidity wrapped in the guise of national interest, patriotism, fear, greed and self interest. Its only benefactors are those who never really participate except as voyeurs. These voyeurs are quick to send the youth to wage their battles while they reap the profits.
Soldiers are needed now, and forever; as man and his governments will never learn there is no real honor in death by battle, only premature loss of a young man's life to further the interests of persons or ideas that will not alter God's plan for men.
I ask forgiveness of those men I killed in battle. They, like me, wanted no more from life than to live and survive the indignity of being asked to kill or be killed. I was a winner, they losers. I now go to them and must beg their indulgence in permitting me into their house. For the pain and suffering I brought upon them and their families was not their choosing but an uncaring government and my desire to live.
I was a soldier by choice, to all the soldiers of the world, I salute you and I am proud to join all who have died before me, especially those who died through acts of man's own stupidity. As you listen to the saddest song in the world played, I ask you remember; Nobody hates war more than a soldier, remember them and I go in peace."

Michael was a great husband, father, grandfather, friend, warrior and patriot. He will be sorely missed.
